“Hello Marilyn N.5″ by Sean D’Anconia, Mixed-Media in Acrylic on Canvas/Giclee
(an imaginary collaboration we would like to see)

Shown at the recent LAB ART grand opening, Hello Marilyn N.5 contemplates 3 cornerstones of contemporary beauty & Pop-Culture - Marilyn Monroe, Hello Kitty and Chanel! Diamonds were a girl’s best friend of course…until Kitty and Chanel came along…

This piece features a “Maetel-style” (Galaxy Express 999) Marilyn Monroe face/body (particularly the eyes) with some homage paid to Kaoru Shintani’s classic Cleopatra and Area 88 manga. Kitty is re-interpreted and adorned head to toe in Chanel, with nods to a Gotochi Kitty keychain transformed into a parisian Paradigm of Kawaii Couture. The Chanel bottle as well is the vintage original with significant color and transparency mods…

While the content of this piece does offer some satire to the possibility of a present-day Marilyn sporting Hello Kitty couture, it more than anything pays homage to the ultra-feminine and sublime nature of the kawaii sensibility juxtaposed with the more ethereal nature of ultimate, mature beauty Monroe represented.
