Spoke Art’s QUENTIN vs COEN: ROUND 3

This Saturday evening at the LA Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park–please join us for BEYOND EDEN host to Spoke Art’s QUENTIN vs COEN show–ROUND 3. This show has toured the country from San Francisco to New York and the final chapter will take place here in Los Angeles.

The show’s focus is a two-fisted double feature of the Coen Bros vs Quentin Tarantino. My contribution is “Kill Bill Epilogue: O-Ren Ishi(i)”* (Honorable Tokyo Vampire Girl Boss). Yes…the title is as long as the sword she wields! It’s a fusion-homage to both Kill Bill and a little “Grindhouse/From Dusk Till Dawn” tossed in for good measure.

As I was a tad annoyed by O-Ren’s untimely death, along with GoGo and Bill in Kill Bill 1-2, I decided that in the spirit of B-movie heaven, I would bring back my 3 (or more) favorite characters from the dead. So say hello to Lady Vampire Yakuza! And of course…O-Ren is out for revenge…

*O-Ren has dropped the extra “I” in her name after returning from the dead, going from ISHII–”Stone Water Well”–to just “Stone”–ISHI. In my faux film…O-Ren’s body is dropped down the water-well near her family’s home in Japan as per the instructions in her will. When she returns from the dead, she climbs out of that well…now spiritually made of stone…or “ISHI”…

The faux-film is set to premiere at the once mecca of Japanese Cinema in Little Tokyo (Los Angeles) – The Linda Lea Theater. Co-stars include Takakura Ken, Uma Thurman, Kaji Meiko, David Carradine and Julie Dryfus (with a mechanical arm!).

Some themes/iconography: Lady Snowblood/Female Prisoner Scorpion manga and film footage, Hanafuda cards, Orochi Irezumi tattoo art, David Caradine in Kimono once worn by Sugawara Bunta, Matsumoto Leiji 60′s Sexaroid body structure, Tanto blade used by Tetsuya Watari, Red Peony on Lucy Liu originally on Fuji Junko’s body in Hibotan Bakuto. Nods to Ennio Morricone. Kill Bill color scheme with MOD influence. And of course, a cameo of Mayumi decked out in Game of Death outfit (sitting in GoGo’s lap).

Event Address: 4800 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90027

Sat: 6-11pm, Sun: Noon-5pm
