LOS ANGELES, Sep. 17, 2012 – Emerging sushi and izakaya restaurant in Los Angeles’ historic Little Tokyo–ABURIYA TORANOKO–is revamping its menu and culinary team with an exciting re-Grand Opening on September 28th, highlighted by a Pop-Art Showcase featuring visual artist Sean D’Anconia.
Toranoko owner and celebrated restaurateur, Michael Cardenas, heads the Innovative Dining Group which developed and which runs many of the United States’ top tastemaker restaurants including Sushi Roku, Katana and BOA Steakhouse, in addition to Cardenas’ own downtown LA restaurants, the Lazy Ox Canteen and Fat Spoon.
“We’re thrilled to bring incredible new talent to Toranoko led by two seasoned and dynamic Sushi Chefs – Seiji Nakano and Hiro Fujita. Both Chef Nakano and Chef Seiji have a strong history as leading culinary innovators, while staying true to the best of Japanese traditions”, explains Cardenas. “We’re breaking the mold with Toranoko by introducing some of the most inventive and contemporary Japanese fare available in North America today”.
In celebration of his new team, and to show continued appreciation to the Little Tokyo community, Cardenas will be welcoming local artist Sean D’Anconia to showcase a collection of his creative works at the opening. “Sean D’Anconia seems to capture in art, what we are about in food. Embracing the best of Asian and Western aesthetics, but adding a new and compelling magic to that recipe”.
Reflecting on the Japanese lifestyle so prominent in Downtown LA: “We’ve seen an emergence and convergence of east meets west in recent years,” explained artist D’Anconia, “and evolving into something new.” D’Anconia’s pop-art reflects this, mixing eastern design and western influences. “I fell in love with Japan at a very young age, and I wanted my art to expose those aspects of Japanese culture that inspired me, to a broader audience.”
Along with selection of D’Anconia’s recent paintings, the Grand Re-Opening will offer complementary sake, wine and hors d’oeuvres to guests. D’Anconia will be on hand to unveil several new pieces as well as signing a limited edition Toranoko commemorative poster. D’Anconia will be previewing a few pieces that he is working on for his “Artist in Residence” at Wonderground Gallery, Downtown Disney® District (Disneyland® Resort), an event slated to open in October.
