RAFU SHIMPO / NISEI WEEK 2013 / HEROIC IDEALISM

I am quite fortunate to have the very articulate and respectful journalist – Mikey Hirano Culross – write an article about my participation in Nisei Week this year.

I moved to Little Tokyo from Hong Kong five years back – and I actually discovered that the area even existed way back in 2002 when dreaming of Japanese gardens in Montreal (where we had none). And so I scoped out the New Otani Hotel, and hoped to visit it one day – perhaps on a trip to LA. Little did I know that I would end up spending a month in the “garden suite” at the New Otani years later, before settling on Little Tokyo as my home.

It was Mikey Hirano Culross who first photographed my work for Rafu Shimpo 3 years back and it’s fitting that as he introduced my work publicly to the Little Tokyo, and Japanese community – that he should also be the person to explain (and quite well) – a little of my history, my work and my ideas in the Nisei Week Edition of Rafu Shimpo.

  1. wanted to see about buying a copy of your latest Neseiweek poster for 2013. my favorite noodle bar had the poster taped to the men’s room door but it kind of fell apart when the waitresses tried to peel it off the door. would like a copy to frame for my 10 year old daughter’s new bedroom.

    thanks in advance,

    Chris

  2. Hi Chris,

    Thanks for your message!

Nisei Week will not be printing more posters but at their suggestion, I will instead offer a similar version of my own in the next few days to those fans that missed out. It won’t be official Nisei Week, because that’s only available once a year but it will hopefully capture the same feeling.

    :)

    Best,
    Sean
