(above: Abashiri Ikka: Kiku-chan’s Gurendaiza Irezumi Surprise!, Limited Edition print at 36 inches)
Abashiri Ikka or Abashiri Family was created by the famed Go Nagai – creator of Grendizer (Gurendaiza), Mazinger Z, Devilman, etc. My art features Kikunosuke (Kiku-chan) who is actually a girl (but treated like a boy) in this outrageous crime family named after Japan’s most notorious Yakuza Prison.
(above: old school Japanese ninkyo-eiga posters featuring Takakura Ken, Fuji Junko and…guess who!)
Her irezumi tats feature the one and only Grendizer (and the two manga eventually tie together) and the Orochi (mythical Japanese serpent). The entire art piece is inspired by the original Shonen Champion Comics where Abashiri Ikka had its start.
