While I’m putting the finishing touches on my newest Hello Kitty-inspired art piece, I’m making available a few Artist Proofs just in time for Valentine’s Day – vintage and original. The final art will actually be part of a series of Mixed-Media originals depicting Kitty-chan (as Oiran) and friends at the famed Japanese Hoshinoya Onsen. If you’re interested in the painted original, please email me – sean (at) popsean.com.
The piece is based on several photos taken at Hoshinoya Onsen, redrawn (Pop-Surreal-ポップシュールレアリズム-style) and features a cast of Kitty-esque favorites with a Mandala-Zen-Buddhist visual structure.

I included a multitude of re-drawn gotochi-kitty inspired keychains/toys for the supporting case. For Kitty herself, I went all Oiran-Maiko-Geisha crazy, and re-imagined her walking down the streets of Kyoto in those massive Koma-Geta.

Vintage variant – Many little details including some Kaiju (Japanese monsters) — Gachadachi JoZilla in the background from SupaPop City — and vintage Nintendo-inspired hanafuda abound…
